Get Involved Locally on Denim Day!

Show Your Colors on Denim Day

LACASA Center invites individuals, businesses and organizations in Livingston County to participate in Denim Day on Wednesday, April 25, 2018.

The Denim Day campaign began after an Italian Supreme Court ruling overturned a previous rape conviction. Justices in the case said that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove them, thereby implying consent.

Each year, on the anniversary date of the court’s ruling, organizations, businesses, elected officials, and people around the world wear blue jeans to raise awareness about sexual assault, consent and victim-blaming.

“One of the nice things about Denim Day is that people can easily participate, as an individual or a group,” said LACASA’s Community Education Director, Nicole Matthews-Creech. “Companies often encourage employees to wear jeans to work on that day in exchange for a donation to a local sexual assault response center. These businesses may choose to match the donations of their workforce and make a collective gift.

“Another way anyone can get involved is to give the gift of time,” Creech said. “They can put up awareness posters and pass out stickers, which we provide for no charge at LACASA.”

According to Creech, Denim Day offers people a chance to discuss an uncomfortable topic.

“Denim Day starts a conversation about the myths surrounding sexual assault—especially about the meaning of consent,” said Creech. “If we discuss these issues, we can help change perceptions. We want victims in our community to know that if they come forward and seek help, they will not be blamed and shamed.”

Creech added, “In this day of the #MeToo movement, it is more important than every to show our support for victims and survivors of sexual harassment and sexual assault.”
