YOUR GIFT: Donate just $5 this year and your contribution will help prevent child abuse and neglect in Livingston County

You can make a small donation on your 2014 Michigan taxes and make a huge difference in the life of a child from Livingston County.

“We have a unique opportunity to increase the funds available in our community to prevent child abuse and neglect,” said Deanna Norris, director of LACASA’s Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Council. The CAP Council provides county-wide seminars, workshops and awareness programs designed to prevent child neglect, child abuse and child abuse.

LACASA’s Check the Box. Change a Life. campaign encourages county residents to make a small donation when they submit their tax returns this year, Norris said. “Contributions may be made for $5, $10 or more. People can fill out the form themselves, or ask their tax preparers to do so.”

It’s an easy process, said Norris. “Use Michigan Form 4642, check the box on Line 6, and make a donation to the Michigan Children’s Trust Fund.

The CAP Council is a designated local council of the Michigan Children’s Trust Fund (CTF). Each year, CTF provides grant funding for programs run by LACASA’s CAP Council in Livingston County, as well as other local councils across the state.

CTF will track Form 4642 donations from every county in 2014. Increases in donations over previous years will be used to calculate increases in funding for each county during the next grant cycle.

The CAP Council’s community-wide programs include:

  • Stewards of Children: Educates parents and professionals who work with children about how to recognize and react responsibly to suspected child abuse
  • Period of Purple Crying: Teaches teens who babysit, or care for siblings, why they should never shake a crying baby. The program helps prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome.
  • Mandated Reporting: Informs professionals about their legal and moral responsibility to report suspected child abuse

CAP programs significantly impact the lives of children in our neighborhoods, our schools, and our community.

All 2014 donations are deductible on next year’s federal tax returns.
